DUSHANBE: Tajikistan is in talks with Russia and a Moscow-led regional security grouping about the possibility of Russia deploying troops to jointly patrol the volatile border with Afghanistan, three Tajik security sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Five Chinese citizens have been killed and five wounded near the border in the past week as a result of attacks launched from Afghanistan.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon held consultations with the chiefs of his security agencies on Monday about the situation and China has advised its residents, who are involved in various mining and business activities, to promptly evacuate the border area.

One of the three Tajik Security Council officials told Reuters that the authorities have discussed with Russia the potential of deploying personnel from Moscow’s military base in the Central Asian country to jointly monitor the Tajik-Afghan border.

The base is Russia’s largest overseas military post, and it is located near Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe.

“We’re currently in talks. “I believe a decision will be made this week,” the person told Reuters.

Two more officials from Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security corroborated the talks with Russia, which, if successful, would see Russia utilise helicopters to patrol the 1,344-kilometer border with Afghanistan, which travels across rugged territory.

When contacted about the negotiations, both the Tajik and Russian defence ministries declined to comment.

According to the sources, the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation alliance was also involved in the talks. A request for comment was not immediately returned.

Afghanistan’s Taliban officials have stated that they will collaborate with Tajikistan on border security problems.

In a phone discussion with his Tajik counterpart, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed sadness and said Kabul was ready to improve border force coordination, adding that “joint measures against malicious elements are a pressing necessity.”

“The Islamic Emirate is fully prepared to strengthen border security, conduct joint investigations, and engage in any form of coordination,” Muttaqi stated, according to an Afghan foreign ministry statement. Reuters
