JERUSALEM:<\/strong>
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> said on Sunday that he expects the second phase<\/strong> of the US-brokered Gaza truce plan to begin \u201cvery shortly\u201d, signalling a new and more complex stage in the months-long ceasefire arrangement. He also confirmed he will meet US President Donald Trump<\/strong> later this month to discuss regional peace efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceasefire, which came into effect on October 10<\/strong>, brought a halt to hostilities that erupted after Hamas\u2019s deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023<\/strong>. Despite easing violence, the truce remains fragile, with Israel and Hamas repeatedly accusing each other of violations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Phase: Hostage Releases and Partial Withdrawals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the deal, Palestinian militant groups agreed to release the remaining 47 Israeli captives<\/strong>, both living and deceased, taken during the October 7 attack.
So far, all hostages have been released except for one<\/strong>, the body of an Israeli police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the initial phase, Israeli forces pulled back to positions behind what the military termed the \u201cYellow Line\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 a temporary demarcation inside Gaza. Although troops withdrew from some areas, Israel continues to maintain control over more than half of the territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel\u2019s military chief, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir<\/strong>, described the Yellow Line as a \u201cnew border line\u201d<\/strong>, reflecting the shifting dynamics on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Phase: Disarmament and Security Restructuring<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaking after talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz<\/strong> in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said the upcoming phase would be \u201cmore difficult\u201d<\/strong> and central to determining Gaza\u2019s long-term security structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second phase of the truce plan includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Disarming Hamas<\/strong> and removing its military capabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Further Israeli troop withdrawals<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Establishing a transitional governing authority<\/strong> in Gaza<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Deploying an international stabilisation force<\/strong> to maintain security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Netanyahu stressed that the ultimate aim is a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces<\/strong> if the outlined conditions are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe have a second phase, no less daunting, and that is to achieve the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarisation of Gaza,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Regional Diplomacy Pushes Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Countries that helped broker the ceasefire\u2014Qatar and Egypt<\/strong>\u2014called on Saturday for progress toward the next stage, including the broader pullback of Israeli forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In a rare statement, Hamas<\/strong> signaled willingness to surrender its weapons<\/strong> to a unified Palestinian authority, but only if the Israeli military ends its occupation<\/strong> of Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Netanyahu\u2013Trump Meeting Expected This Month<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Netanyahu also confirmed he will visit Washington later in December after receiving an invitation from President Donald Trump<\/strong>.
    The two leaders are expected to discuss \u201copportunities for peace<\/strong>\u201d and the broader security landscape in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
