A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake<\/strong> struck off Japan\u2019s northern Pacific coast late Monday, triggering a tsunami warning<\/strong> and sending residents rushing to safer ground. The quake hit near Misawa in the Aomori region<\/strong> at 1415 GMT<\/strong>, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at a depth of 53 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tsunami Waves Recorded Along Northern Coast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Japan\u2019s Meteorological Agency reported multiple tsunami waves<\/strong>, with the first reaching Aomori\u2019s coastline at 11:43 pm (1443 GMT)<\/strong>. The waves measured up to 50 centimetres (20 inches)<\/strong>, and authorities warned the situation could escalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top government spokesman Minoru Kihara<\/strong> urged the public to remain in safe areas until the warning is officially lifted, stressing that \u201csecond or third waves may arrive with greater force.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
