Senior Hamas commander Raed Saed, one of the architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, was killed by the Israeli military in a strike on a car in Gaza City on Saturday, according to numerous Israeli media sites citing sources.

The attack killed four individuals and injured at least 25 others, according to Gaza health officials. Hamas and medics did not immediately confirm that Saed was among the victims.

The Israeli military claimed to have struck a senior Hamas commander in Gaza City, but did not provide a name or any specifics.

If Saed is assassinated, it will be the highest-profile assassination of a top Hamas figure since the ceasefire agreement went into force in October.

According to an Israeli defence official, Saed was targeted in the attack and is the director of Hamas’ weapons manufacturing force.

According to Hamas sources, he is the second-in-command of the group’s military wing, after Izz eldeen Al-Hadad.

According to those sources, Saed formerly led Hamas’ Gaza City brigade, which was one of the group’s largest and best-equipped units.

The Israeli military stated that two troops were previously injured by an explosive device that “detonated during an operation to clear the area” of militant infrastructure. It was unclear whether the two instances were related.

The Gaza War began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people, the majority of them were civilians, and took 251 hostages in an offensive on southern Israel. More than 70,700 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive, the majority of them are civilians, according to Gaza’s health officials.

The truce on October 10 has allowed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to return to Gaza City’s ruins. Israel has withdrawn troops from city positions, and relief shipments have risen.

However, violence has not totally stopped. Palestinian health experts claim that Israeli soldiers have

Strikes in Gaza since the truce have killed at least 386 civilians. Israel claims three soldiers have been killed since the cease-fire began, and it has struck scores of fighters.
