On 28–29 February 2026, senior Israeli officials made statements suggesting that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed during a large‑scale military operation conducted jointly by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets, including the compound associated with him in Tehran. These assertions spread rapidly across news outlets worldwide. However, it is important to emphasize that these reports are still unverified and officially disputed. No independent confirmation from neutral international sources has been established, and Iranian authorities strongly deny that Khamenei has died, calling the claims unfounded and a form of psychological warfare.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in televised remarks, stated that there were “many signs” suggesting that Khamenei was no longer alive after a joint US‑Israeli offensive destroyed significant portions of his compound and struck multiple strategic locations across Iran. Israeli outlets even reported that a body believed to be Khamenei’s was recovered from the rubble. These comments were carried by major international news agencies citing Israeli officials.

Despite those statements, Iranian government officials have firmly denied that Khamenei has been killed. Senior representatives, including Iran’s Foreign Minister, explicitly stated that Khamenei and other top leaders are “safe, sound and alive.” Iranian state media described the Israeli claims as “mental warfare” and insisted the leadership remained intact. No official announcement from Tehran has confirmed any harm to the Supreme Leader.

As of the latest available information, there is no verifiable evidence from independent or neutral observers confirming the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. Both Israeli statements and denials from Iran highlight the deep uncertainty surrounding the situation. Although some Israeli reports claimed evidence exists, major international bodies such as the United Nations, or neutral governments outside the conflict, have not verified these assertions.

What Israel Has Claimed

According to statements attributed to Israeli government sources:

  • A major military operation targeted the compound associated with Ayatollah Khamenei as part of a broader strike involving numerous sites across Iran.

  • Officials claimed there were signs that Khamenei may have been killed in the attack.

  • Some reports stated that a body believed to be the Supreme Leader’s was found in the aftermath.

    Iran’s Denials and Official Response

    In direct response:

    • Iranian authorities rejected the death report, maintaining that Khamenei and most senior officials remain alive.

    • Iran’s government described the Israeli claims as misinformation meant to undermine Iranian morale.

    • Iranian state media and officials reiterated that only a few commanders may have been lost, but not the Supreme Leader himself.

      Why the Report Is Unverified

There are several reasons this situation remains unresolved:

      • Conflicting statements: Two opposing narratives — Israeli claims vs. Iranian denials — without independent verification.

      • Lack of neutral confirmation: No confirmation from independent global organizations, neutral governments, or reputable international journalists operating on the ground.

      • Information war: In high‑intensity conflicts, strategic misinformation or premature reporting can occur before facts are fully established.

At this moment, the true status of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remains unclear. Major international agencies are continuing to follow the developments, and further reliable updates may emerge as more information becomes available.
