A major military operation has reportedly struck more than 90 Iranian military targets on Kharg Island, a strategic oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, in one of the largest single strike campaigns of the ongoing regional conflict. According to statements from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation involved large-scale precision airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure while deliberately avoiding damage to critical oil facilities on the island.

Kharg Island is located roughly 20 miles (32 km) off Iran’s southern coast in the Persian Gulf and plays a crucial role in the country’s energy economy, handling up to 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports. The island hosts major oil terminals, storage tanks, and export pipelines connected to Iran’s largest oil fields, making it both a strategic energy hub and a key military logistics location.

Large-Scale Precision Strike

Military officials said the operation targeted missile storage bunkers, naval mine depots, and other strategic military facilities used by Iran to project power in the Gulf region. CENTCOM described the strike as a “large-scale precision operation”, confirming that over 90 military sites were successfully hit during the overnight campaign.

The strike reportedly destroyed multiple facilities used for storing naval mines and missiles — assets that Western officials believe Iran could deploy to disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

Explosions were reportedly heard across the island during the operation, with some reports suggesting at least 15 blasts occurred as military installations were struck.

Oil Infrastructure Spared

Despite the scale of the attack, officials emphasized that oil export infrastructure was intentionally spared, reflecting concerns about global energy markets. Kharg Island is responsible for the majority of Iran’s oil shipments, and damage to its export terminals could trigger major disruptions in global oil supply and prices.

Military analysts note that targeting oil facilities directly could have triggered a worldwide energy crisis. As a result, the strikes focused strictly on military installations rather than the island’s oil terminals and storage tanks.

Strategic Importance of Kharg Island

Kharg Island has long been considered one of Iran’s most critical strategic assets. The island hosts both energy infrastructure and military installations, including naval bases used to support Iranian maritime operations in the Persian Gulf.

Because of its location and role in global oil markets, the island has historically been viewed as a potential pressure point in conflicts involving Iran. Analysts say disrupting military activity there could significantly weaken Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping routes in the region.

Broader Military Campaign

The strikes on Kharg Island are part of a broader campaign targeting Iranian military capabilities during the ongoing regional conflict. According to military officials, operations have focused on missile systems, drone networks, naval forces, and weapons depots used by Iran or its regional allies.

Reports indicate that thousands of military sorties have been flown since the beginning of the campaign, with several thousand targets across Iran and the wider region reportedly struck in an effort to weaken Tehran’s military infrastructure and reduce its ability to threaten regional shipping lanes.

Warnings and Escalation Concerns

Following the strikes, officials warned that further action could target additional facilities if Iran continues attacks on shipping routes or regional military bases. Some leaders have also suggested that future operations could expand if maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains threatened.

At the same time, the strikes have raised concerns about further escalation in the Middle East, particularly given the island’s central role in global energy markets and Iran’s strategic defense network.

Regional and Global Impact

The Kharg Island strikes highlight the growing intensity of the conflict and the strategic importance of energy infrastructure in modern warfare. While the attack focused solely on military facilities, the location of the operation underscores the fragile balance between military objectives and global economic stability.

With the Persian Gulf serving as a crucial route for international oil shipments, any major disruption involving Kharg Island could have immediate consequences for energy prices, shipping security, and regional stability.

As tensions continue to rise, analysts warn that the conflict’s next phase could involve further attacks on military installations across the region, while diplomatic efforts attempt to prevent the conflict from expanding into a broader regional war.
